So
we're leaving the Fair yesterday and someone is offering free books, which
always gets my attention, until I see that the title is "More Than Just a
Carpenter" so we keep walking. Farther out in the lot are two guys popping
open a stack of boxes and offering more free books, only these come
rubberbanded with a CD, both with groovy swirly covers. Book + CD = Willy
Vlautin-esque and I'm interested, ask what it's about. "Two kids growing
up in Alaska," one guy says. The title is "Too Far" and I take
it and walk and maybe it's the Alaska reference, or maybe it's seeing all those
boxes of free books, but I tell Carley the whole "Wild Animus" story
as we're walking out to the car, "Wild Animus" which I still see on
the shelves of used bookstores everywhere, including Powells when we were up
there a couple weeks ago. I didn't pick the book and CD up until today, read
the back cover, skipped to About the Author - Rich Shapero - author of one
other book: "Wild Animus."
